Hard Water and Softeners

Hard water problems

hard water Hard water is made up of various forms of minerals that are in found in well water and in our municipal water’s supply. These minerals are composed of Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron and many other dissolved solids.
These minerals can cause several issues in the household the most common of which is calcium deposits on fixtures and appliances like dish washers, water heaters ice makers and any other appliance that uses water. Not only do the minerals in your hard water damage appliances, but they also prevent soaps from being able to do a proper job of cleaning due to the curding effect.

Treating minerals in water:

There are a few ways to remove unwanted minerals from your water supply.
The most common way is through Ion Exchange, ore commonly know as Water Softening. This method is done with salt that exchanges hardness ions for sodium ions. Most of the softeners in use today are of a demand type system that uses salt more efficiently.

There are single and twin tank water softening systems available. A single tank softener tends to be a bit more wasteful with salt than a twin tank system due to the nature of the capacities . Generally, in order to have treated water at all times, you should have an over sized single tank system that will be able to keep up with the home’s water demand. These type of water softening systems need to regenerate late at night or when water is not being used in the home.

A twin tank water softening system regenerates on demand as well, however when the gallonage setting is reached, the twin tank system will regenerate at that time and switch over to the stand by tank, giving your home soft water 24/7. The twin tank softener will also regenerate itself with conditioned water, in the process using less salt to regenerate the same amount of media, saving you money and extending the life of the softener.
