Well Drilling FAQs

Do wells go dry?

The short answer is yes, a well can dry up, but it doesn’t happen very often. If you are experiencing a water shortage with your central Indiana well, the problem may be as simple as a screen clogged with debris. A well may need to be drilled deeper to reach additional groundwater in rare cases.

Is it the deeper you go, the better the H2O?

This is not always the case. What may be true for some locations is not the same for others. Well depth doesn’t always dictate water quality. “Deep” is a relative term, and while a 20-foot well may seem deep to one person, it is considered shallow to another. Shallower wells tend to be more vulnerable to water contamination. Proper well cleaning and maintenance will keep your water clean and healthy.

Do you witch for water?

“Witching,” or dowsing, is an alleged way to locate water, oil, even gold hidden underground. We have seen mixed results when drilling over witched well locations and have not found it more reliable than other means to pick a well location. That being said, we have hit some excellent wells when they are witched after struggling on a property to find water. In the end, if you want to have the site witched, we will drill where you would like us to and do our honest best to yield the very best possible results. When we have trouble finding water, we look to a few different techniques to find water depending on the lay of the land.

How do you know where to drill?

Great question! Locating groundwater is a much more exacting method than simply drilling holes in the ground. C&J employs several proven techniques that include surveying and research, to name a couple. We like to pick places to drill that are safe for everyone involved and convenient for our clients. The first drill does not always produce a well, so we rely on industry guidelines and proprietary secrets to find quality potable water.

What stage of new construction do you normally drill?

We have several options for well production for our clients who are building new homes or other buildings that require a freshwater supply. We can drill a well midway through framing if you require temporary water during construction, and we wait until the framing is finished before drilling the well if you need a permanent water supply. When planning to build, be sure to talk to a licensed, experienced central Indiana well driller like C&J who can answer your well questions and ensure the safety of your project.
